Set in 100 acres of meadows and woods, less than 2 hours from Paris, between Chartres and Tours, Chateau de La Barre breathes elegance and authenticity. It has been in the family for six centuries, and has its own 16th century dry moat fortifications, chapel, flower gardens, fountains and pond. The Comte and Comtesse, Guy and Marnie de Vanssay will immediately make you feel at home as you join them for drinks in the 18th century Grand Salon with boiseries and ornate chandeliers.
Five magnificently luxurious en-suite bedrooms are gilded with sumptuous fabrics and fine antiques, without compromising on contemporary comforts! Every heirloom tells story, which your hosts will be happy to share.

Chambre Bleue
Louis XVI furniture and oil paintings enhance the XVIIth century bleue boiserie walls. Standing on the balcony in the fresh country air, a splendid view of the vast garden and fountain, and, further in the valley, the sheep ambling by like snowflakes.

Suite Esprit de Jouy
With the famous 'toile de Jouy' fabrics covering the walls, these two adjoining rooms, one blue the other green, are prestigious remnants of the art of French life of bygone times. Louis XVI furniture, beautiful XVIIIth century Dutch, Italian, French and English paintings, a king size four poster bed and an authentic Louis XVI canope bed all conjure up the life of a gentleman during the Siècle des Lumières. Double room with king-size four poster bed and an-suite bath, 200 euros per night. Adjoining single with en-suite shower 130 euros. Small adjoining room for a child for an additional 50 euros.

Luscious fabrics, ancestral portraits, an Aubusson tapestry and palatial Bachtiar carpet adorn this sixteenth century living room. The secular furniture and the chimney convey a complete feeling of comfort, elegance, and quiescence to this room.

Pièce à Feu or Billiard Room
The ‘Pièce à Feu’ was the place where all, lords and servants alike, would gather around the vast fireplace, during the hundred year's war. Dating back to 1300, this room, a symbol of warmth and sharing, has now become the 'Games Room'. Up to you to choose whether you would rather play billiards whilst enjoying a warming glass of cognac, or converse about tropical climates with Kakou, our parrot !

Grand Dining Hall
Splendour worthy of the 'Grand Siècle' awaits you in this impressive dining room with its’ cabochon tiled floors and prodigious 'vaisselier', a masterpiece in its own right. Candlelit dinner, 65 euros, all included.

1. Historic properties, Grand Siècle sojourn
Forget everyday life and come live the life of an XVIIIth century gentleman with the Comte and Comtesse de Vanssay, 20th generation of the family who have lived in Chateau de La Barre the XIVth century. A warm welcome with chilled champagne awaits you in their elegant home full of antiques, portraits and a rich past, which Guy and Marnie look forward to sharing with you. All the rooms are decorated with period antiques, designer fabrics and overlook the gardens and 100 acre park. During the days, discover the remarkable old city of Le Mans with it's gallo roman walls, and the many manor houses and XIIth century churches with frescoes of this picturesque and still undiscovered countryside. The famous chateaux de La Loire are just a little further afield. Three nights, one candlelit dinner in the grand dinning hall and English breakfasts from 680 to 890 euros.

2. Wine tasting :
Discover the wines of the Loire and Loir Valley. Spend 2 nights in one of the unabashedly elegant and comfortable rooms of this ancestral home, Chateau de La Barre, hidden from the hussle and bussle in 100 acres of gardens, meadows and woods. Enjoy a candlelit dinner in the Grande Salle à Manger, during which you will discover three different wines perfectly suited to the meal and commented by the Comte de Vanssay. The following morning, after a hearty English breakfast, he will help you find the good addresses of local producers, and that evening reserve dinner for you in one of the local restaurants renouned for its’ wine list. 3. Total immersion French lessons in style:
The Countess de Vanssay is of Anglo-American origin, so is fluent not only in French but also in English and especially in meeting the expectations of our guests from 'the other side of the pond', making them feel truly at home whilest immersing them in French history, culture and language. Special French lesson week beginning either March 18th or April 16th. Other dates possible upon request
2 hours tailor made private lessons on 5 out of 6 mornings, private guided visits of the Loire Valley chateaux, local XIIth century churches, manor houses, the Old city of Le Mans, as well as a wine tasting in the afternoons. 6 nights, breakfast, lunches and dinners (French spoken during meals too), wine, French lessons and tours from 3450 euros pp all incl.
