Attractions
In the village there is a small grocery store/café, boulangerie, bar/tabac, post office, tennis courts, campsite, small children’s park, library, football pitch, photographic museum and designated walk ways and cycle routes.
We have listed below just a few of our favorite places to visit all within a half hour drive.
Marais Poitevin - Starting right on our doorstep!
A captivating region which holds the status of regional National Park and has become one of the best loved tourist attractions in Charente Maritime. Where in some places water has replaced roads and the only contact between people and villages is a maze of mysterious canals. The canals are of a “green pea soup” colour from the duck weed hence the name “Venise Verte”. During the summer months it is possible to take a trip on a punt or rowing boat (with or without a guide) and glide along the serene canals by day or night. There is no shortage of things to do in the local area, whether it be discover the landscapes of Marais Protein by the peaceful pace of draught horse, stroll on a horse/pony, have a guide show you how to fish and cook crayfish, or board a river cruiser or tourist train giving you an insight to the history, flora, fauna and architecture of the marshlands villages. Alternatively hire a bike and explore the numerous peaceful and beautiful villages and marshlands along the 55km sign posted cycle tracks across the countryside.
La Rochelle - With its beauty and diversity it is no wonder it has 3 million people visit here each year. At the heart of this medieval city is the "Vieux Port" ("Old Harbour"), which is spectacularly lined with a diverse range of restaurants and cafes over looking the multitude of luxurious and lavish boats and yachts. Daily bustling markets, an impressive aquarium, beautiful beaches, boat trips, museums, cinemas, art galleries and a shoppers paradise you will be hard pushed to decide what to see and do first. Adding to the cosmopolitan appeal is the constant festivals and major events held throughout the year such as Grand Pavois, International Film Festival and Francofiles.
Chatelaillon Plage - Some extravagant architecture with a somewhat “Americanized look”, this is an idea place to take families. Lively seaside resort with promenade stretching over 3 km, a casino, beachside park, water complex with flume and indoor and outdoor pools, sailing school and clubs. Your time here could be spend enjoying spectacular views from the promenade of nearby islands or panoramic view of the Marais Poitevin from the fortified church or even take a guided tour of the oyster beds in a charabanc pulled by a tractor with on-site oyster tasting!
Ile de Re - The Charente Maritime’s answer to St Tropez! Lying off shore from La Rochelle, an impressive 3 km bridge you can walk, drive or cycle taking you to the most picture postcard villages. Cycles and the island of Re go together like a cheese and vine, with 100 km of cycle tracks, bikes are the preferred mode of transport and therefore cyclists can be seen everywhere. Bikes are available to hire, and there is no better way to discover the delights of this majestic island. There is a wide range of water sports available, magnificent beaches, golf course, bird sanctuary, markets, boat trips, or just enjoy meandering through the narrow cobbled streets and small shops. Alternatively savor some seafood and admire the “beautiful” people sailing into the marinas and look out for Johnny Depp or Bill Gates mowing their lawns!
